BINNIE SCORES AS CURTIN AND QUINNS SHARE THE SPOILS

An acrobatic save late in the game by returning Curtin University Football Club custodian Ranjeet Sekhon preserved a point for the home side as they drew with high flying Quinns FC on Friday night. Rory Binnie again got on the score sheet for Curtin but his early goal was cancelled out by a Dave Ashworth header in the second half. Albert Bucchino and Eddie Tikoft led the way for the home side while Ashworth was outstanding for the visitors.

Curtin dominated early proceedings and it took only 11 minutes for a quintessential pass from the tireless Tikoft to release Binnie who beat the keeper with aplomb. After this Quinns began to find their feet and it was Nathan Smith who had a chance for the visitors but he headed wide 23 minutes in. It was end to end stuff for the remainder of the half with both teams having have chances but proving wasteful in front of goal.

Curtin came out of the half time break looking to build on their 1-0 lead and it only took three minutes for them to have the ball in the back of the net, only for the goal to be disallowed. Curtin began to dominate with Bucchino controlling tings from the back line and Quinns breaking up play with their physical style. After 60 minutes of play Ashworth headed home with power from a set piece to restore parity and set up an exciting finish to the match.

With less than 10 minutes to play controversy struck as Callum Traynor reached out with his hand to prevent Curtin’s Carlo Chiellini from being through 1 on 1 with the Quinns keeper Adam Bowels. Taynor was, to the surprise of the home fans, only shown a yellow card and went on to prove instrumental as Quinns defended resolutely for the remainder of the match. As the game headed into added time Quinns were denied a late winner as Sekhon dove full length to his left to keep the scores level.
