Classy Curtin Too Good For Roos

11 Apr 2016 by Curtin Football Committee

In the first game of the season proper Curtin University Football Club defeated a new look Kelmscott Roos side 1-0. Eddie Tikoft (slotting in at centre back) and Dom Jakszuk were stand outs as well as goal scorer Daniel Young, new recruit Brandon Kagaro and young goalkeeper Jack Kenny.

It started well for Curtin as they were on top early but they could not convert their possession and Young’s cutback after some tight work down the wing was cleared for a corner on the 8 minute mark. Curtin continued to push but could not put the ball passed a resolute Roo’s defence, led by their goalkeeper who was outstanding all day. Kelmscott looked to score on the counter but did not trouble Kenny as the teams went into the half time break at 0-0.

The second half was much the same as the first, with Curtin playing some neat football but not converting their chances, that was until the introduction of substitutes Louis Downham (pictured) and Jon Krawec. Krawec won the ball out wide, and set off a chain reaction passing move of sweet one touch football that included Downham and Tikoft which ended in Young slotting home from 12 yards with 20 minutes left to play.

In a strange move Kelmscott seemed content to sit back and defend from this point, Curtin dominated possession while still carving chances, both for Tikoft and Khaled Salhah, before running out comfortable winners.

Curtin’s next match is at home to old foes Olympic Kingsway on Friday night at Edinburgh oval. Kingsway are coming off the back of a 5-3 trouncing of former WA power house club Morley Windmills and it is billed as a tough encounter for the Uni based side. The main game kicks off at 8.30pm preceded by the reserves at 6.30pm.
