Curtin Continue Unbeaten Run

26 Apr 2016 by Campbell Ballantyne

Curtin had a perfect ANZAC weekend with victories in both league and cup to extend the unbeaten start to the season. Saturday afternoon saw Curtin score either side of half time to comfortably dispense with Ellenbrook. The first came from a well delivered cross from Jon Krawec forcing the Ellenbrook keeper’s error saw his punch roll into his own net. In Typical Curtin style the midfield controlled possession making Ellenbrook work very hard to get any use of the ball. It was simply a matter of time before the second went in . A great cross from substitute Dilip Thapa was controlled into the path of Khaled Salhah by Eddie Tikoft and Salhah made no mistake.

On ANZAC day Curtin hosted division 1 side Canning City in the FFA cup at Edinburgh Oval. Curtin opened the scoring with a hard low strike after a surging run from left back by club captain Kye Middleton. Within minutes of halftime canning had a great chance to get back in the game when they were awarded a penalty. Jack Kenny however made a great save to preserve the lead. Both sides were playing for the second time in the weekend. Curitn were clearly dealing with the physical demands better as Canning had already lost two players early to injury including captain Callum Roberts. Again the second goal came as Canning began to tire when Krawec played in Russo who despite running all day still powered past the defense and squared for Salhah to volley home. The result sent Curtin into the quarter final, making the last 8 of the States premier cup competition for the first time.

Throughout the two games Curtin’s back four of Middleton, Harvey, Jakszuk and Mark Matkovic were outstanding in securing clean sheets in both games.

Curtin have drawn NPL power house Stirling Lions in the quarter final on the evening of 14th May. Stirling has won the WA league title 7 times most recently as 2013 and the WA cup 6 times.

The next league game is at home v Balga on Saturday 30th April, Balga have also started the league unbeaten and have a maximum 9 points out of 9.

Further thanks to the players and parents of CUFC under 12’s who were ball boys, mascots and ground marshals for the day.
