Curtin's Chance to Make History: President Campbell Ballantyne on the Club's Biggest Game Yet
16 May 2023 by Jordan Valentini
Since joining state league football in 2014 this is only our second time we have progressed to a cup round against NPL opposition and the very first time we have welcomed a men’s NPL club to Edinburgh Oval, not only that tomorrow we host current men’s NPL champions Floreat Athena.
That night away to Stirling Macedonia has definitely gone down in club folklore and is still talked about. Only earlier this year I got a text from Antony Russo asking if I had the team sheet for that game as himself Jon Krawec and Eddie Tikoft were talking about a game 7 years ago and how one of their best memories at Curtin was a game that ended in defeat. We were written off that night before a ball was kick and 1-0 in the first 5 minutes. A sublime free kick from Khaled Salhah and the performance of his life in goals from Jack Kenny meant at the end of 90 min it was 2-2, with Curtin unlucky not to have won it. Extra time proved too much though and the NPL side over ran us. The night was spiced up by 150+ traveling Curtin fans, the rest of WA football supporting us and the Stirling Coach refusing to shake hands.
Tommorows game:
To Troy and tomorrow nights team, my message is simple; imagine how long we will be talking about it if - no, when we beat them. This really could be biggest game and result in the clubs 31 year history.
To our membership, the forecast is excellent, Marc Sacco the chef from our masters team has taken on the catering and the bar staff have cleaned the clubhouse and been whipped into shape. Cancel your plans and get behind the team - tonight could be talked about for years, decades, or longer.
